Job Description


Responsible for the maintenance, repair, and inspection of freight cars to assure they are safely maintained in a quality, cost effective manner. Other responsibilities include the managing of train yard and car shop operations. Responsible for responding and managing service interruptions within the terminal and mainline. Managing special projects in support of mechanical operations; personnel management; meeting objectives to support shop and terminal production plans; and ensuring all work is being performed within company guidelines, safety rules, and in accordance with FRA and AAR standards.

  • High School Diploma

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred


Three years managerial experience or equivalent


  • Strong knowledge of locomotive and rail car operations.

  • Strong knowledge Terminal, Shop and Mainline operations.

  • Strong technical skills – AAR and FRA

  • Proven leadership, communication and planning skills.

  • Demonstrated commitment to safety.


  • Manage car operations including; shop, terminal and mainline.

  • Monitor safety, quality and production performance in shop and terminal.

  • Communication with appropriate parties of all aspects of shop and terminal, daily plan & shift turnover documentation to ensure plan execution (conference calls, schedule adjustments, staging plans, terminal interaction, inspection and other duties as assigned.

  • Monitor and maintain car dwell.

  • Audit equipment reports daily and inspect equipment on a regular basis to ensure compliance.

  • Ensure compliance with KCS RR and equal employment policies, safety and operating rules, schedule agreements, attendance guidelines, and Government regulations.
